Police receive crisis training

Bonner Springs and Edwardsville police officers were among 25 law enforcement officers who completed the first Crisis Intervention Team training offered in Wyandotte County, Feb. 27-March 1.

The desired outcome of the training is to keep persons with mental illness out of correctional facilities by making officers more aware of signs of mental illness, symptoms and de-escalation skills. Participating organizations also included the Kansas City, Kan., police department; the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Department; the University of Kansas Medical Center; Kansas City Kansas Community College; District Court Judge Kate Lynch; University of Kansas Psychiatric Liaison Services; and Wyandot Center and its Crisis Clinic.
