Competition now under way for BSHS girls swim team
The Bonner Springs girls swim team began its first competitive meet last week at the Topeka Invitational, and estab- lished momentum that carried over into a third-place finish at the Washington Invitational on Monday.
Although the Braves placed 10th out of 11 teams in Topeka, coach Lynn LaNoue’s squad returned home with a host of bright spots to build on.
In her first high school meet, Cassie Stock missed qualifying for state in the 50-yard freestyle by just 0.03 of a second. She also nearly qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing just 0.69 of a sec- ond away.
LaNoue said Toni Stock swam one of her best races, finishing strong in the 100-yard butterfly’s final leg.
“This is a big development for her since she has been to state in the 100- yard fly for the last couple of years,” LaNoue said.
Overall, the team scored 80 points. Cassie Stock led the team with fifth-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100- yard breastroke.
Toni Stock also finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and finished 14th in the 200-yard freestyle.
Elizabeth Barger finished 15th with a personal best in the 100-yard breast- stroke.
The relay squad of Stephanie Rose, Cassie Stock, Toni Stock and Elizabeth Barger finished 10th in the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle. The
relay team of Scintilla Capalla, Akiko Capalla, Madison Stumbough and Lei’Onna Smith established a personal- best time in the 200-yard freestyle, and finished ninth in the 400-yard freestyle.
“What a great way to start off the swim season,” LaNoue said.
The Bonner Springs girls swimming team returned to the pool on Monday, and placed third with 153 points. Cassie Stock placed first, and Barger finished third in the 200-yard individual medley.
Toni Stock also earned a first-place fin- ish, besting the field in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Cassie also finished second in the 100- yard backstroke. Other top five individ- ual finishes included: Stumbough finish- ing second in the 200-yard freestyle and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, Barger fin- ishing third in the 200-yard individual medley and second in the 100-yard freestyle and Smith finishing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Akiko and Scintilla Capalla and Cassie and Toni Stock finished fourth. The 200- yard freestyle relay team of Stumbough, Toni Stock and Akiko and Scintilla Capal- la took fifth. And the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Toni and Cassie Stock, Smith and Barger finished second in the event.
