BSHS finishes fourth at state wrestling
Salina Two individual titles and four total medals powered Bonner Springs to a fourth-place team finish at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament Saturday in Salina.
The Braves, who entered Saturday's competition in fifth place, finished the tournament with a combined 17-7 record and 90 points. Holton won the team title with a score of 104.5.
BSHS seniors Jonathan Blackwell and Aaron Puckett ended their careers as state champions, winning titles at 152 and 160 pounds, respectively. Blackwell (35-1) earned a 5-3 win against previously undefeated Jake Gehring of Buhler in the finals. Meanwhile, Puckett (41-0) capped off an undefeated season with an 8-0 win against Andale's Kyle Armstrong.
"Going undefeated was a huge accomplishment," Puckett said. "It was my goal at the beginning of the year. Having people wanting to put that first loss in your column, it's hard. You've just got to wrestle that much better."
Junior Josiah Seaton (106) also reached the championship round, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Jake Goldenstein of Augusta. Senior Justus Seaton (113) earned the Braves' only other medal with a fourth-place finish. He won his first three matches on Saturday before falling in the consolation finals.
D.J. Ballard (120) and Bryan Lanning (145) also entered the tournament's final day with a shot at medaling, but both were eliminated after dropping their first matches of the day.
