Bonner Springs girls fend off Tonganoxie to stay perfect in KVL
Bonner Springs coach Clay Oakes knew his squad would need four solid quarters to leave Tonganoxie with a win on Tuesday. The Braves were at their best when it mattered most, and the results spoke for themselves.
The Chieftains nearly erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but BSHS recovered down the stretch and picked up a 49-37 victory.
"This was definitely big," Oakes said. "This is a tough place to play and Tonganoxie is a good team. You know you're going to have to play for 32 minutes and do things right if you want a chance to beat them."
After a low-scoring first quarter, Bonner Springs (7-1, 5-0 Kaw Valley League) jumped out to a 20-11 lead midway through the second. The Chieftains (6-1, 4-1) regained their composure and closed out the half on a 9-3 run, making it 23-20 BSHS at the break. Tonganoxie hit two quick shots to briefly take the lead in the third quarter, but those were the only four points it managed for the duration of the period. The Braves capitalized with 10 straight points to take a 33-24 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Another 9-3 THS run made it a three-point game with 5:51 remaining, but Bonner Springs closed out the game on a 13-4 run of its own to stay perfect in league play.
Starters Haley Hoffine, Anna Deegan and Julianne Jackson spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench with four fouls apiece, but several key plays by reserves prevented a THS comeback in the final minutes.
"Some girls coming off the bench did a really great job of locking down the defense," Oakes said. "Everybody contributed tonight, so this was definitely a team win."
Jackson led all scorers with 16 points — 14 in the first half — and Deegan added 13 for the Braves. Tonganoxie's Jenny Whitledge recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Braves will put their 4-0 league record to the test on Friday when they play host to Mill Valley. Meanwhile, the Chieftains will try to get back in the win column at Turner.
