Bonner Springs residents must prepare for special election

September 4, 2013

Bonner Springs residents should make sure they are registered to vote, and possibly request a ballot, if they want a say in the proposed extension of a quarter-cent sales tax.

The Bonner Springs City Council approved a Mail Ballot Election question to replace the one-quarter cent sales tax that funded the Aquatic Park with another tax at the same rate. The Aquatic Park sales tax will end December 2013, and the mail ballot election to replace that tax will be held Oct. 1.

The Wyandotte Election Commissioner published the Election Schedule that can be found at along with the necessary forms to register. Registered voters or residents who registered before Tuesday this week will automatically receive a mail ballot. Residents not registered may still register but need to do so and request a mail ballot no later than this Tuesday, Sept. 10. Residents may register in person at Bonner Springs City Hall, the Bonner Springs Library, or the Wyandotte County Election Office, 850 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

Residents who wish to vote by Advance Voting must submit an application no later than Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Election Commissioner will begin delivering the ballots to the post office on Sept. 11. Sept. 27 is the last day the Election Commissioner will mail ballots to residents that requested them.  Mail ballots must be returned to the Election Office no later than noon by mail or by personal delivery on October 1.

Tips for Mail Ballot Votes provided by the Election Office:

• Sign and place your correct address on the mail ballot return identification envelope.  If the voter does not sign the return identification envelope or complete the address, the ballot will not be counted.

• Late ballots will not be counted.

• Voters who elect to not mail their ballot must personally deliver it in the return identification envelope to the Election Office by the Oct. 1 noon deadline, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
