Four Bonner Springs commercial properties are in the process of making some changes.
The Bonner Springs City Council Monday reviewed an economic development update from Marcia Harrington, community and economic development director, with business updates showing changes or improvements for several properties.
The most widely-known may be that it was finally confirmed last week that Steak ‘N Shake will move into the former Wendy’s building in Canaan Center on the northwest corner of Interstate 70 and Kansas Highway 7. Harrington reported that the restaurant hoped to open around May 15, though building renovations were still ongoing.
Just north and east of that at 130th Street and K-7, Ensign Storage is planning to add three new buildings for a $350,000 investment. The company last year purchased about five more acres of land, and the council Monday approved a rezoning and changes to the comprehensive plan and final plat for the project. The additions should be complete in early June.
The not-for-profit business Create 2 Day has moved from 11939 Kaw Drive to a vacant downtown space formerly occupied by The Roving Imp Theater at 117 Oak St. The business provides craft items for repurpose and reuse.
Finally, the Bonner Springs Walmart has submitted remodeling plans for the grocery portion of the store. It plans to upgrade its coolers, freezers and cold case units at an estimated cost of $660,000. The grocery section will remain open during the project, which is planned for June.
