Friday morning police chase, shooting originates in Bonner Springs
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers Friday shot and killed a suspect while assisting Edwardsville and other local police in pursuit of an armed robbery suspect.
The highway patrol reported that shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday, troopers were assisting the Bonner Springs and Edwardsville police departments and other local police in the pursuit of a carjacked pickup, which traveled across state lines and then back into Kansas. The pursuit ended at 12th Street and Ruby Avenue in Kansas City, Kan., when the suspect was shot and killed.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Officer Heather Brooks of the Bonner Springs Police Department said the chase began after a gunman carjacked a work truck about 8:53 a.m in the 400 block of South 137th Place in the Lei Valley subdivision in Bonner Springs.
The gunman reportedly approached a Moxie Pest Control employee and demanded the keys to his work truck at gunpoint. The gunman ordered the worker to back away before fleeing in the truck. He fled east on Kansas Highway 32, where Edwardsville Police located him and attempted to pull him over on a traffic stop. Edwardsville police were not involved in the chase once the highway patrol and Kansas City Kansas police joined the chase.
As standard practice, and in accordance with Kansas Highway Patrol policy, the trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on Administrative Leave while this case is being investigated. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been notified and is conducting the investigation, in conjunction with Kansas City, Kansas Police Department.
