Flash flood watch issued for Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte Counties

July 6, 2015

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties from 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday evening.

A severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued until 11 p.m. Monday for the same areas. Multiple rounds of heavy rain are expected to affect counties throughout eastern Kansas and rainfall amounts of up to 4 inches are expected.

Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is expected Monday night with locally higher amounts of over 4 inches possible. Another round of rain is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday with another 1 to 2 inches possible.

The National Weather Service warns that rivers, creeks and streams will be especially susceptible to flooding along with some roads and low water crossings.

Several inches of rain over the past few weeks have saturated soils and caused a swelling of area streams, according to the National Weather Service. Several rounds of heavy rainfall are expected to fall on top of the already saturated soil through midweek and will result in elevated risk of flooding.
