Bonner Springs wrestlers headed to nationals
Wrestling season never truly comes to a halt. It might be the middle of the summer, but a pair of Bonner Springs High School student-athletes are definitely keeping busy in the competitive world of Greco-Roman.
Reigning Class 4A state champion Tanner Hitchcock and teammate Thomas Fehlhafer will be headed to the Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, July 18-25.
The tournament, which will be held at the Fargodome on the campus of North Dakota State University, brings in thousands of wrestlers from all over the United States who compete on 23 mats over a six-day period. In the end, one wrestler from each weight class will be crowned as the national champion.
In order to help with funding for the trip, Bonner Springs varsity coach Brandon Jobe has created a GoFundMe page on the boys’ behalf. All donations will go toward assisting them with travel expenses.
“These two have been working extremely hard for the last few months and deserve our help,” Jobe wrote on the page. “They have attended Regional Training Center practices every week since March, wrestled in many local tournaments, traveled to the state tournament, attended the Southern Plains camp and tournament and represented Team Kansas at National Duals. They are committed to making themselves and Bonner Springs wrestling better.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, the page had raised $685 in just five days, quickly approaching its goal of $1,000. To make donations, click HERE.
“I've had many people ask me, ‘How can I support Bonner Springs Wrestling?’ Here's how,’” Jobe wrote. “These trips become very costly. Please help take the financial burden off their families and help out two of Bonner Springs’ finest. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Thanks for investing in these young men.”
