Bonner 4-H club members earn ribbons at WyCo Fair
With the Wyandotte County Fair underway this week, the Bonner Springs-based Brauer Beavers 4-H Club has been competing — and winning — for the last several days.
Kamren Brown, Kameron Zimmerly, Christina Edwards and Lauren Edwards all competed in the 2015 clothing construction project at the Wyandotte County Fair judging held on Saturday at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church. As part of the project, each member made a dress to donate to African girls through a project with Johnson County Community College.
Brown made a tablecloth for his poultry project to use at the fair, for which he received Grand Champion on in his age division. He was also awarded purple on his cooking apron and a purple on his African dress.
Zimmerly received Grand Champion and purple for an apron he can use while cooking. He also received Reserve Grand Champion and purple on slacks he uses at the Renaissance Faire for his part-time job in the fall. He was awarded purple on his African dress, as well as purple on his house slippers.
Lauren Edwards was awarded Grand Champion and purple on her African dress and Reserve Grand Champion and purple on her apron, for which she used beautifully appliqued, store-bought jeans and sewed lace details around the edges.
Christina Edwards’ pink colored apron received a purple ribbon, as did her African dress.
Braden Korgol competed at the same contest on Saturday for his clothing buymanship and style revue project. Buymanship involves learning how to coordinate and buy clothes affordably, while the style revue involves modeling clothes and being interviewed about them.
Korgol modeled and answered extensive judge questions regarding his blue polo shirt, red-striped T-shirt and khaki shorts. He accented his outfit with a red and blue belt and white and blue shoes. He was awarded Grand Champion for the style revue and Reserve Grand Champion on his buymanship project.
Wyatt Dale competed both Friday and Saturday with his 8-month-old black Labrador puppy, Maverick, in agility and showmanship and rally-o. They received Grand Champion and blue in showmanship and white ribbons in agility and in rally-o. The fair competition was the first 4-H events Dale had ever participated in.
