Police arrest suspects in Tuesday morning armed robbery following chase
A high-speed pursuit that began in Kansas City, Kan., continued through Shawnee and ended in Bonner Springs Tuesday afternoon involved the suspects from a earlier armed robbery in Shawnee, police say.
Maj. Dan Tennis of the Shawnee Police Department confirmed that authorities have located the suspects' vehicle and have arrested three people following the chase.
The pursuit began on Southwest Boulevard just before 1 p.m. Tuesday. According to police, the chase continued into Shawnee near Holiday Drive and Interstate 435. At about 1:10 p.m., the driver was reported northbound on Kansas Highway 7.
Three suspects ditched the car in Bonner Springs and fled on foot, according to Heather Brooks, Bonner Springs police spokesperson. Brooks said they were found a short time later after authorities from the Kansas Highway Patrol as well as Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, KCK and Shawnee police departments spent about an hour searching a nearby wooded area.
Two K-9 units, one from KCK and one from Shawnee, were deployed as well as the KHP helicopter to search for the suspects, Brooks said.Three suspects were arrested shortly after 2:30 p.m.
The suspects are thought to be the ones who tried to rob a man at gunpoint while he was walking his dog in the 4800 block of Halsey Street at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The resident was walking near 49th Street just east of Black Swan Lake when a vehicle drove up alongside him and the passenger in the front seat pointed a gun at the him, according to Shawnee police. The suspect demanded the man's wallet and keys. The man said he did not have anything with him and the suspect vehicle drove away north, police said.
The car that approached him was occupied by four white male suspects, all under the age of 25 and possible teenagers, he told police. Each of the men in the car were wearing white T-shirts with red bandanas covering their mouths. The vehicle was described as an older model white two-door Ford Focus. The handgun used was described as a large-caliber, silver colored and automatic.
The vehicle involved in the police pursuit exactly matched the description given by the victim.
