Bonner Springs High student, resource officer recognized by White House

September 18, 2015

A Bonner Springs High School student and the BSHS school resource officer will be among seven pairs of young people and law enforcement officials honored at the White House as Champions of Change Monday.

Master Patrol Officer Anthony Davis and Blake McMahan, BSHS senior, will represent Bonner as “Champions of Change” who are building bridges between youth and law enforcement, while improving public safety. Bonner Springs Police Chief Mark Zaretski said police officials were told that they were selected from a couple hundred nominations sent in for the award. Davis and McMahan will join awardees from Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin.

Davis is the school resource officer and teaches criminal justice classes for the school. Under his leadership, two students from the Criminal Justice Program were among the top three scorers in the Kansas Skills USA Criminal Justice competition last year. He is being recognized for significantly strengthening the relationship between the Bonner Springs Police Department and the broader community.

McMahan currently serves as President of the Criminal Justice Club and is responsible for several initiatives that have increased student participation and strengthened ties with the local police department. Last year, he placed third in the Kansas Skills USA Criminal Justice competition. This past summer, McMahan spent more than 160 hours volunteering at the Bonner Springs Police Department and hopes to one day work in the department as an officer.

The event will be live streamed on the White House website, whitehouse.gov/live, at 2:30 p.m. Monday. To learn more about the White House Champions of Change program, visit whitehouse.gov/champions. Follow the conversation at #WHChamps.
