Dwight K. Runnels

Dwight "Rocky" Runnels, 85, a longtime resident of Basehor, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Basehor United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Glenwood Cemetery in Basehor. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, also at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to Basehor United Methodist Church or the RP Foundation Fighting Blindness Inc., both in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Runnels was born on June 17, 1922, in Archer, Neb., to the Rev. James and Esther Runnels. He came to Kansas in 1940 and entered in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the 104th Infantry Division during World War II. He married Ruth Helen Roberts in 1945. She died Dec. 12, 2005. He was a barber for 60 years and owned Runnels Barber Shop in Basehor.

He was a longtime member of the Basehor United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was an active member. He also was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include two sons, Kent Runnels of Leavenworth and Paul Runnels of Basehor; a daughter, Nancy, of Olathe; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Hubbel, Basehor.
