Robert E. Payne 1923 - 2009

Olathe — Services for Robert “Bob” E. Payne, 85, Olathe, will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Sharon Baptist Church, Olathe. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.
Mr. Payne died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, also at the church.
He was born March 31, 1923, in Pleasant Dale, Neb. He was raised in Nebraska and joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 at the age of 19. He flew 31 missions during World War II with the 8th Air Force, 487th Bombardment Group, 837th Bomb Squadron, as the nose gunner in a B-24 Bomber named the “Weary Wolf.”
In 1944 he married Ruth Patricia Hazzard and they were married for 52 years.
Mr. Payne worked for Certain-teed Corp. for 44 years. He was a lifelong Southern Baptist.
His wife died in 1996. A son, Robert E. Payne Jr., died in 2007. Two infant children also died earlier.
Survivors include five children Donald J., William T. and wife Barbara, Patricia A. Schuman and husband David, James N., Timothy B. and wife Nancy; a brother, Joe; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
