Sandy loved many kinds of sports, but especially baseball and football and to a lesser degree basketball. He encouraged Steve to play any kind of sports and he did. Sandy attended every possible event in which Steve was involved. He also encouraged his grandchildren to participate in them.
Sandy had several different careers throughout his life. He was a door-to-door milk delivery man as well as to some retail establishments in Emporia. Upon moving to Bonner Springs in 1966, he became a school custodian first at the high school and then head custodian at the junior high school. A little later, he went to work for the city of Bonner Springs as a maintenance/custodian for some of its low income properties. He retired from them in 1990. During those years and for many years after that, he did maintenance and cleaning for Interstate Federal Savings and Loan, overseeing 3 of their buildings. He finally retired from that position in 2005. He was a veteran, having served in the Air Force for several years in the late 1940’s.
Sandy could fix about anything. He spent a lot of his time helping others do things. He did much volunteer work for the churches to which he belonged – first the Free Methodist Church in Emporia, later Aldersgate Free Methodist Church in KCK, and then Trinity Fellowship in Olathe, KS. In 1998, he and Vivian traveled to Ghana to help begin a Free Methodist church plant in Accra, for a man from there that they met at Trinity. He always called Sandy, Paa, as an adopted parent.
Sandy loved the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind. As he passed into heaven, the family and others at his bedside sang his favorite song, “How Great Thou Art.” He will be missed by all who knew him. Arrangements Alden-Harrington Funeral Home (913) 422-4074 aldenharrington.com
