Reverend Russell W. Davis, Sr. 1918 - 2014 Kansas City, KS

Rev. Russell W. Davis, Sr.

Rev. Russell W. Davis, Sr., 96, Founder and Pastor Emeritus of Christ’s Church of the Jesus Hour, Kansas City, Kansas passed Monday, November 10, 2014 in California.
He was born October 5, 1918 in The Dalles, Oregon to Capitola Walton and Jess C. Rhone and was the second of four siblings. After the untimely death of their mother in 1922, the children were raised and lovingly cared for by their grandparents, Elizabeth and Richard Shelby of Bonner Springs. Davis graduated from Bonner Springs High in 1936 and went on to attend Western University. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Park University and completed studies at Central Baptist Theological Seminary.
He was married to Elsie C. Dinsmore for 64 years. To this union five children, four daughters and one son, were born. She preceded him in death.
Davis was a veteran of World War II and recalled receiving The Chieftain while stationed in the South Pacific. After recovering from shrapnel injuries, he found employment with the United States Postal Service and retired after 25 years to devote himself full-time to ministry.
He was called by God to the ministry 57 years ago. Davis’ first pastoral assignment was Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Grandview area of Bonner Springs. He often said that Brown Chapel and its members were the best pastoral experience a novice minister could experience. That church no longer exists but it was from there that Rev. Davis began a live broadcast ministry of his sermons from a small Christian radio station in Leavenworth, Kansas.
The “Jesus Hour” radio ministry and “The Morning Watch” television broadcast enabled Rev. Davis to extend his ministry beyond church walls. Davis’ ministry took him throughout the world where he preached far and wide. After an intensive course in Japanese, he and his wife spent seven-weeks in Tokyo and with the help of an aide, taught the Gospel. He also made several visits to Haiti.
He founded Christ’s Church of the Jesus Hour, Kansas City, Kansas in 1971, and in 2013 became Pastor Emeritus. Rev. Davis was predeceased by his mother, wife, grandparents, and siblings Kenneth Shelby, Lois Margaret Alston, Marge Capitola Smith. He is survived by his children Rita L. Savage of Utica, New York; Constance Davis-Springer, Long Beach, California; Marlene Davis, Utica, New York; Dawna J. Rodgers (Napoleon), West Bloomfield, Michigan and Russell W. Davis, Jr., Dallas, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Christ’s Church of the Jesus Hour, 1119 North 18th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Viewing from 9-11 AM with the service beginning at 11 AM. Burial following at Bonner Springs Cemetery, Bonner Springs, Kansas.
