Gil Hoag bends to open the electronic rain gauge, powered by a solar panel, given to him by the National Weather Service. The gauge records daily readings onto a chip, which Hoag then sends to the NWS each month. Also in his backyard, Hoag checks another rain gauge daily and an electric temperature gauge that tracks the highs and lows.
