What if we're just unhappy with our chief of police? Then what do we do? Why doesn't he live within the city limits? Couldn't we save money if he lived in the city limits so we wouldn't be paying for his fuel to drive to and from HOME? Plus the cost of maintenance on the car? Is he allowed to transport his family in his city owned vehicle? Run personal errands or the like in the city owned vehicle? Is he still traveling to all those "trainings" and "conferences"? Do we pay for his hotel stay? Do we pay for his meals? Do we pay his registration fees? Can I get this information from the city clerk?
I thought Chief Mathies had the department "cleaned up". I guess I was mis-informed. Maybe our new Asst. Chief will help pick up the slack since we're down an officer - heaven forbid the chief actually do patrol type work - he's probably to busy going to trainings and such.
It's obvious to me that Mathies is big on self promotion. He already has the shirt that says chief of police and fire so he really needs to be chief over both department. Plus it will look really good on his resume once he's milked our community for all he can. How big of a pay increase is he looking at with this? Chief can barely lead the PD how can he lead the FD and the PD? Why not just hire one fire chief and keep Mathies as the police chief? Why hire 2 new positions? Even if promoting from withing, will the new deputy chiefs just get additional duties along with their regular duties? Or will this end up costing even more money because the deputy chiefs will be to busy with new duties to perform old duties?
My opinoin is that Mathies is just looking out for #1 not the city/public.
Looks like Chief Mathies got his way again. Lower his pay rate back where it was BEFORE he was acting fire chief and hire someone with fire department experience and the department will run as it should. How much is Mathies getting paid to do all these duties? How much will the asst chief make? Who will decide who the new asst chief will be? I'd bet it will be one of Mathies' cronies. He's been in law enforcement for several years, I won't be suprised when one of his old law enforcement buddies become the asst. chief. Hiring Mathies was a huge mistake our community leaders made a few years ago - lets not make another with the asst. chief.
So an asst police chief in opposition to a fire chief? It may be a monetary savings, but is it a good idea to have two people running the fire department that are not fire fighters? Who will be the hiring authority of this new asst chief? My concern is that the current chief will get to pick one of his "good ol' boys" for this position so he can stack the deck just a little more. Maybe if the current chief weren't running all over the state attending meetings, seminars and such he could get some work done and cut costs in the PD (fuel costs, hotel stays, meals, registrations for seminars).
Maybe hiring a full time FIRE CHIEF would be a good idea. You know someone with EXPERIENCE in running a fire department. Let someone with experience in running a fire department run the department. Just because he can somewhat run the police department doesn't mean he can run a fire deptartment too. Seems we could used to afford both, what happened?
I just want to know if this kind of stuff is still happening here six months later? Why is it taking SO LONG to get a new fire chief? are they even looking or is Mathies just going keep this position? Can Mathies effectivly and efficiently do both jobs? How much are we paying him to do both jobs, is he getting full time pay from both, full time from the PD and part time from the FD or just his PD pay? If he is getting full time from both - is he working an 80 hour week (probably not)?
I notice that yet again Mathies is in the mix of things. I for one am getting tired of Mathies and his way of doing things. Maybe instead of two part time asst. cheifs, one full time cheif would be good and let Mathies go back to trying to run the police department.
Another police officer gone. How many officers are still on the force that were there when Mathies started? Also, where is all this money coming from to replace vehicles, train new personnel and upgrade equipment? Seems like the EPD is going thru funds and personnel at a quick clip.
