Heard in Bonner: Christmas cards at City Hall

• Mayor Clausie Smith shared Christmas cards made by the Bonner Springs Elementary School choir — one card for each grade level — at Monday’s city council meeting. The cards will be on display at City Hall through Christmas.

• More than 200 people showed up at the Dec. 6 Hollywood Casino job fair at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Organizers say some started lining up at 7:30 a.m., though the job fair didn’t start until 10 a.m. The job fair mostly looked to fill positions for the casino’s restaurants — cooks, bartenders and servers. This is the third job fair the casino has conducted. The first, in August, was for dealers and drew about 650 people; the second was in October at the Overland Park Sheraton and brought out about 800 people.

• More from KCKCC: the college’s Fire Science program has more than doubled in size in the last year, from 53 to 100 participants. The program also has a new look thanks to some remodeling, which a Bonner police officer contributed to. Lt. Rick Schubert, who is one of the police department’s fire investigators and also works part time for KCKCC’s campus police, helped build a rack for the breathing apparatus air containers. Also, Dr. Nancy Thomas, who coordinates the program, is a Bonner resident. I’m hoping to chat with her for a story about the program in the next couple of weeks.
