Heard in Bonner: 3rd Street Asylum, NASCAR trees and casino jobs
News and notes from around town:
• Total numbers for the 3rd Street Asylum Haunted House are in, with 2,129 attendees, about 200 more than last year. This is made a little more impressive by the fact that haunted house was open two days less this year than it was last year. Money raised from attendance fees paid, in part, for the use of the 1918 building, and $3,150, was put toward the Parks and Recreation Youth Scholarship Fund.
• 30 trees have been planted in the city, thanks to NASCAR’s Green Clean Air program. The city apparently has been on a waiting list to receive trees through the program, which started in 2009, for some time, and 18 were planted in parks, five along streets and seven in the cemetery.
• October was a busy month at the Bonner Springs City Library: 18,511 visitors, 12,320 items checked out, 3,486 computer usages and 100 new library cards issued.
• A good sign of interest in the Hollywood Casino at Legends Speedway: I was talking to Al Thompson, table games manager for the casino, and he said 650 people had applied for the dealer school Hollywood is running for potential casino dealers (they only took 183 and then pared that down to 120, though not everyone in the school is guaranteed a job at the casino). They also want some experienced dealers, and he said they’ve had 700 applicants for those positions, from all over the country, including California and Las Vegas. Just a sign that the casino has created a buzz across the country and looks to be the economic boost to Wyandotte County that they say it will be.
