Heard in Bonner: Firefighters banding together

• The Bonner Springs Fire Department is organizing some fundraisers for Brendon Kasselman, a firefighter who was diagnosed with cancer. I am working on a story about this for next week’s paper, but here’s the basic information to keep in mind when you make your plans for the next week or so: The firefighters will have a silent auction, poker tournament and raffle for a .22 rifle Jan. 22 at Twisters (Kansas Avenue and K-7). Registration for the poker tournament will start at 11 a.m. Jan. 22, and the tournament itself will start at 1 p.m. The silent auction and raffle will run concurrently with the poker tournament. The auction will include two custom fire helmets, gift certificates and a custom firefighter t-shirt quilt. Watch for more information at bonnersprings.com — I will be posting it as soon as it becomes available. • I spoke with Lt. Rick Schubert at the Bonner Springs Police Department about their efforts to crack down on motorists who don’t obey traffic laws when it comes to school buses stopped, with their stop signs out and lights flashing, for students entering or exiting the bus. We had a story warning about the police enforcement in December, and officers began riding on select buses in town once school was back in session after winter break. Schubert said two citations have been given to drivers who did not stop for the school buses, and they plan to continue the special enforcement indefinitely. Remember to obey the law — a citation will cost you $300. • Just a reminder: city offices will be closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.
