Helping hands
News and notes from around town:
• In need of help — Attention Bonner Springs Elementary School supporters: we recently had a story about the grant BSE got from Lowe’s to create an outdoor learning area. The school will have an Outdoor Learning Center Work Day 9 a.m. – noon Sept 22. They need rakes, shovels, weed-eaters, a small chainsaw… and probably any volunteer help they can get. Contact Mendy Brents at brentsm@usd204.net with questions.
• In need of support — The Bonner Springs High School Football Team, the Bonner Springs Fire Department and the Bonner Springs Family YMCA are teaming up to raise money for a scholarship in Brendon Kasselman's name by selling T-shirts. At just 30 years old, Kasselman was diagnosed in late 2011 with stage 4 metastatic melanoma; he recently lost his battle with the disease. At the Oct. 5 high school football game, there will be a tailgate party and the opportunity to purchase a shirt for $10. Contact jacksond@usd204.net if you can't attend the event but would like to order a shirt.
• Helpful hands — The city’s Public Works Department, always on call, stepped up after hours during recent storms when trees fell into the road and on power lines. On Sept. 2, a Saturday, they responded to a call for a fallen tree on Warner north of Front Street. Part of the tree was caught in the power line, so after Westar removed the power line, city employees removed the tree. About 2:30 a.m. Sept. 5, they responded again to a tree limb in the road on Riverview east of 142nd Street, where two power poles had broken. Again, once Westar took care of the power lines, the city removed the tree.
