Kansas Relays - High School - Day 1

6 p.m. This is the final dispatch for the day. We'll be back bright and early for day two tomorrow.

Girls 800-meter Run: Maranatha Academy's Lauren Harrell surged from fifth to second on the second lap of her heat, where she finished. She took eighth overall in 2:19.71.

Boys 800-meter Run: Mill Valley's Kurt Loevenstein won the second heat in 1:57.26, but finished seventh as the top five finishers were from the third heat.

Girls 4x100-meter Run: Shawnee Mission North didn't qualify for Saturday's finals, but it did qualify for the Sunflower Showdown. The Lady Indians took 17th in the preliminaries in 51.22. Mill Valley was disqualified for an illegal baton transfer.

Boys 4x100-meter Relay: SM North finished in 24th in 44.67, a little more than a second out of ninth, which would have qualified the Indians for the finals tomorrow. Bonner Springs was 42nd in 46.26 of the 50-team field. Mill Valley was one of three teams that didn't finish. Chase Midyett and Andrew Hicks bobbled the handoff as the baton fell to the ground.

3:30p.m. Boys Medley Relay: SM North and Mill Valley took 12th and 16th, respectively. Noah Stevenson, Scott Johnson, Colin Dujakovich, Ben Burchstead finished in 11:00.73, while C.J. Meeks, Drew Nelson, Teddy Gillespie and Jacob Coacher crossed the line in 11:13.33.

3 p.m. Girls Medley Relay: Mill Valley's medley relay of E Wilson (4:07.06 1,200-meter split), E Hansen (1:04.45 400-meter split), S Rudicel (2:36.40 800-meter split), M Wieschhaus (5:34.991,600-meter split) took 15th, 55 seconds behind first place finisher Lee's Summit West.

1:30 p.m. Girls Triple Jump: Mill Valley's Kasey Meeks jumped at 35 feet, 1/4 inch on her second jump, qualifying her for the finals. However, she passed on her three jumps on the finals. She finished eighth.

Girls 4x1,600-meter Relay: Shawnee Mission North's relay team of Samantha Taylor (5:23.16 split), Emily Stava (5:37.56), Gretchen Burchstead (6:03.90), Nicole Revels (5:49.72) finished 14th in 22:54.33.

Girls 400-meter Run: Shawnee Mission Northwest's Caroline Bingham, was less than a second from the top nine, which would have qualified her for the finals tomorrow. She finished 13th in 1:00.04.

1 p.m. Boys Triple Jump: SM North's Scott Johnson took 16th with a jump of 42 feet, 6 inches. Bonner Springs' Anthony Kubas and Jordan Jackson took 27th and 30th, respectively, with jumps of 38 feet, 9 3/4 inches and 37 feet, 10 3/4 inches, respectively.

3,200-meter Run: SM North's Sada Kernodle set a school record with an 11:21.60, good for 17th place. Maranatha's Lauren Harrell crossed the line one spot ahead of Kernodle in 11:20.93. In the boys race, Ben Burchstead set a personal record, coming in sixth in 9:18.28. It was nearly two seconds under his 9:20 goal.
