Kansas Relays - High School - Day 2
1 p.m. The high school portion of the KU Relays has concluded. Girls 4x400-meter Sunflower Relay: SM North's Jazmin Williams was able finish strong a give the Lady Indians a third-place finish. SMN finished in 4:18.31 as Williams passed SM West's anchor at the finish line, just two one-hundreths of a second faster. SM Northwest was in ninth as Caroline Bingham took the baton. She was able to pull the Lady Cougars up to eighth place, finishing in 4:22.01. Bingham ran a 1:01.16 split.
Boys 4x400-meter Sunflower Relay: Mill Valley finished second in in 3:32.90. The Jaguars beat SM West by five one-hundreths of a second and was less than three-quarters of a second behind winner Piper.
Boys 1,600-meter Run: SM North's Ben Burchstead was gassed down the stretch in his heat. He led for the majority of the race until the final 100-meters. He took second in his heat and 14th overall in 4:25.88.
Girls 1,600-meter Run: Maranatha's Lauren Harrell and St. Thomas Aquinas' Haley Dietsch tangled feet at the finish line. Harrell was able to stay on her feet, while Dietsch took a spill. The two finished second and third, respectively, with Harrell finishing in 5:18.94. She took 18th. Teammate Hope Manning was 23rd. She finished in 5:23.66.
Noon Boys Javelin: SM Northwest's Alex Spring took third with a mark of 185 feet, 4 inches. It was a personal record.
Girls 4x100-meter Sunflower Relay: The Shawnee Mission North girls took seventh in the Kansas-only race. The top-nine teams from Kansas that didn't make the final competed against each other.
Girls Shot Put: Three Shawnee-area girls failed to make the final nine. SMN's Whitney Harvey was the top area finisher, in 16th with a throw of 36 feet, 2 inches. Mill Valley's Madie Holland and Kellyne Weathers were 29th and 32nd, respectively, with throws of 33 feet, 6 inches, and 32 feet, 8 1/4 inches.
Boys Shot Put: Bonner Springs' Kyle Dumler finished 17th with a mark of 49 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Mill Valley's Ryan Smith didn't compete. He's attending Emporia State next year for football and needed to be in attendance for the spring game.
Boys 4x200-meter Relay: Bonner Spring's relay team of Marcel Holmes, Jake Neu, Deion McQuarters and Jordan Jackson took 28th of 29 teams in 1:41.23.
Girls 4x800-meter Relay: Shawnee Mission North's relay team comprised of Emily Stava (2:38.13 split), Nicole Revels (2:28.28), Sada Kernodle (2:33.71), Samantha Taylor (2:33.17) finished 14th. Mill Valley, who competed in the same heat, finished 25th.
Boys 4x800-meter Relay: Mill Valley was three seconds away from a top-10 finish. C.J. Meeks (2:04.46 splits), Teddy Gillespie (2:06.82), Drew Nelson (2:11.53), Kurt Loevenstein (1:59.99) finished 14th in 8:22.78. Bonner Springs struggled as Austin Schuler (2:11.68), Riley Ballou-Lingstadt (2:18.54), Tre Scott (2:18.25), Deion McQuarters (2:38.33) finished last in 9:26.78.
Girls Long Jump: After fouling on her first two attempts, Jazmin Williams was able to score a mark on her third jump, but her 16 feet, 1 1/2 inch jump was unable to vault her into the finals. She finished 16th overall. Mill Valley's Kasey Meeks finished one spot behind Williams, jumping one inch shorter at 16 feet, 1/2 inch.
