Options abound for the sports-hungry fan this week
If you've been wanting to watch a high school sporting event this week and haven't been able to find one to attend, shame on you.
Almost every single Shawnee varsity team has been in action during the past three days, with the exception of tennis which had its state tournaments last week.
Every golf team in town played in regionals on Monday. Class 4A baseball and softball played on Monday and Tuesday — and there were plenty of wins for the local teams as the St. James Academy baseball team went 3-0 and won its regional tournament at the Mid-America Baseball Complex and the St. James softball team posted a 3-0 mark and won a regional title in Baldwin. The only local 4A baseball team eliminated was Maranatha Academy, and the Eagles gave De Soto a scare for a few innings before bowing out.
Class 5A baseball and softball were in action Monday, too, although Mill Valley's baseball team was KO'd in the first round of regionals by St. Thomas Aquinas at the De Soto 3&2 Baseball Complex and the Jaguars' softball team lost to Blue Valley in the regional finals at Blue Valley West.
You also could have caught Shawnee Mission Northwest baseball on Monday at the Johnson County 3&2 Baseball Complex and seen the Cougars win a first-round game in walk-off fashion before losing in the 6A regional finals to Shawnee Mission West on a walk-off single.
In addition, Maranatha Academy and Shawnee Mission North played soccer on Monday and Shawnee Mission Northwest won a regional first-round game on Tuesday.
Only Shawnee Mission Northwest's softball team was in action Wednesday, and the Cougars lost in the regional finals to undefeated Olathe East.
If you missed all of those, or you are simply hungry for more sporting events to watch, you're in luck. Shawnee Mission North's softball and baseball teams are in action today, as are the St. James Academy and Mill Valley soccer teams. On Friday, Shawnee Mission Northwest will play SM West in the soccer 6A regional finals, and every single local track team will be competing in regional championships.
Some teams have been eliminated, but numerous options abound. So if you've been craving local sports and have some time to root on the local athletes, now is your chance.
